So it’s been a couple of years for me in the magical world of Windows 7. Also, I’ve been working on a Mac, so (apart from my Android cell phone) I’ve not been using Linux very much.

I started checking distrowatch to check what’s up with Linuxland and I discovered that besides Ubuntu Studio (which apparently failed to deliver in its latest version), there’s two recent Linux distros amied to the multimedia producers and videomakers: Dream Studio and AVLinux.

They seem to be able to run from a pen drive, so you can bet I’ll be trying both of them in the next days. Interesting fact: they’re both made in Canada =)

If EditShare get its act together, we may add Lightworks for Linux to one of these distros and have a VERY powerful Linux workstation for digital content creation… for free and open source!

If there’s one thing I’m expecting as a child in Christmas’ Eve is Lightworks being released to Linux.

First of all, let me clarify that I’m not an OS evangelist. I’m writing this from my Windows 7 netbook, in the office I edit in a Mac Pro with OSX Lion and my cell phone runs on Android (based on Linux). I’m happy with all those options and I’m even happier I can work within all those environments without trouble.

The thing is that I used Ubuntu a while ago and I was really impressed with its stability. The problem is that even though you can edit cool videos with Kino, you can’t trust it as a powerful NLE if you’re a professional editor and you need to deliver projects with complex compositing and high bitrates of video.

I tried Cinelerra but it was so full of bugs that I decided to wait for Lumiera to be released. And I’ve been waiting since…

So I returned to PC when Microsoft got its act together after Windows Vista and released the pretty stable Windows 7. Yet the audiovisual industry is VERY Mac driven, so you have to learn your ways in Final Cut Pro, the editor I’m currently working with, even though I’m more a Premiere Pro kind of guy.

Now EditShare has promised to deliver Lightworks to Linux and it seems like a pretty sweet deal editing video within the stable enviroment of Linux. I mean, sure there are options like Autodesk Smoke and Piranha to edit in Linux, but those things are like 100 grand, and I’m not exactly working in Avatar 2: Pandora (at least not yet).

Lightworks in Linux could be the answer to all my prayers, but the fact that they failed to deliver in time is not exactly encouraging.

Well, there’s still some time until I buy myself a nice desktop to edit, so let’s just wait and see… =/
